Bakhshaish is a village weave of the Heriz district in northwest Persia and among the most collected of all decorative Persian designs. It is prized for what city workshops never had: large, archaic, slightly naive drawing on soft light grounds, with animals and flowering plants set down flat and confidently rather than modelled. Collectors also file this drawing under Bakhtiari, Serapi and Persian tribal medallion.

The field here is a pale silver-sage with natural abrash, carrying a vertical spine of large cusped cartouche medallions in madder, indigo and saffron, each enclosing a flowering tree. Between them stand confronting deer, hounds and gazelles beside cypresses, rose sprays and small vases. The wide teal-blue main border repeats large palmettes and rosettes between ivory guard stripes. The knotting is even and the wool has a soft natural sheen.

Condition: excellent. Even pile, original selvedges, original hand-tied fringe. No repairs, no stains, no odour.

Measures 9 ft 0 in wide by 11 ft 8 in long (108 x 140 in).
