Tabriz is the workshop tradition of the Persian northwest and the standard by which fine city weaving is measured. Its mark is precision: an all-over lattice of small palmettes, rosettes and curling saz leaves drawn tight and symmetrical, held inside a deep border of larger palmettes on a vine. Collectors also file this drawing under Mahal, Sultanabad and Persian all-over floral.

The field here is a warm brick rust, filled edge to edge with a fine floral lattice in slate blue, sage, ivory and soft rose. The wide indigo main border carries large palmettes and split leaves between ivory guard stripes. The knotting is noticeably finer than village weaving, and the outlines stay sharp even in the smallest rosettes.

Condition: excellent. Even pile, original selvedges, original hand-tied fringe. No repairs, no stains, no odour.

Measures 10 ft 0 in wide by 14 ft 0 in long (120 x 168 in).
