The design is the Bid Majnun, the weeping willow garden, one of the great Persian formats and the signature of Bakhtiari and Tabriz weaving. Instead of a medallion, the field is planted: rows of willow, cypress, poplar and flowering fruit tree alternating across an open ground, a walled Persian garden seen from above. It is a paradise garden, and the repeating trees stand for continuous life. Collectors also file this drawing under Tree of Life, Bakhshaish and Persian garden.

Here the trees run on a soft camel ground with natural abrash, so the pattern reads as light and airy rather than dense. Willows in indigo and teal, cypresses in madder red, saffron and pale blue, each with its own colouring, so no two trees in the field repeat exactly. Five guard borders frame the field, the outermost carrying small birds and animals on a lattice. The wool has a strong natural sheen and the knotting is fine and even.

Condition: excellent. Even pile, original selvedges, original hand-tied fringe. No repairs, no stains, no odour.

Measures 7 ft 10 in wide by 9 ft 11 in long (94 x 119 in).

An 8 x 10 room-size rug. Anchors a living room with a sofa and chairs on the rug, or a dining table with chairs pulled back. The neutral ground makes it easy to live with. Works with traditional, transitional, farmhouse and modern interiors. Reversible for even wear.
