The Bidjar is one of the most respected weaves in the Persian tradition, known for a dense, heavy body and for large-scale drawing that keeps the field open rather than crowding it. Its signature is the great palmette flanked by serrated leaves, repeated up the length of the rug on a curving vine. Collectors also file this drawing under Sultanabad, Bakhshaish and Ferahan.

Here the design runs on a soft blue-grey ground, unusual and quiet against the more common madder. Palmettes alternate in brick red and slate blue, framed by long indigo leaves, with sprays of small rose and ivory blossoms filling the open ground. The wool has a clear sheen and the knotting is fine and tightly packed, with sharp outlines.

Condition: excellent. Even pile, original selvedges, original hand-tied fringe. No repairs, no stains, no odour.

Measures 2 ft 10 in wide by 10 ft 3 in long (34 x 123 in).

Made for a hallway, a stair landing, a galley kitchen or a long entry. The pale ground lifts a dark corridor. Works with traditional, transitional and modern interiors. Reversible for even wear.
