The design reference is the caravan pictorial, one of the oldest storytelling formats in Central Asian weaving. Rather than a medallion or a repeating lattice, the field is a procession: loaded camels roped nose to tail, drivers walking beside them, small dogs and goats and bundles of trade goods scattered between. Weavers recorded what they saw on the Silk Road, so no two caravans are alike and the figures are drawn freehand rather than from a cartoon.

Here four caravan rows cross an indigo field with soft natural abrash. Around forty camels in madder red, saffron, ivory, sage green and apricot, each with its own patterned saddle pack, led by standing figures at the left of every row. The narrow main border carries a running vine of hooked rosettes in madder on indigo. The knotting is fine and even, with crisp outlines on the small figures.

Condition: excellent. Even pile, original selvedges, original hand-tied fringe. No repairs, no stains, no odour.

Measures 4 ft 11 in wide by 6 ft 11 in long (59 x 83 in).

Sized for a living room seating area, a dining nook, a bedroom or a study. Works with eclectic, maximalist, Southwestern and collected-traveller interiors. Reversible for even wear.
