The design reference is the Tibetan tiger rug, woven for centuries as a meditation mat for lamas and as a seat of rank in monasteries. The tiger is drawn as a flattened pelt, striped in abrash gold and madder, with the ribbon-like tail curled back over the body and cloud scrolls at the corners. It is one of the few animal designs in the whole rug tradition that reads as modern rather than antique, which is why designers use it in contemporary rooms.

Here the tiger runs almost the full width of the field in saffron, apricot and deep madder, against an indigo ground with natural abrash striation. Small floral rosettes sit under each paw and stylised cloud brackets fill the right corners. Simple ivory and madder guard border, hand-tied fringe in ivory with red and blue accents.

Condition: excellent. Even pile, original selvedges, original fringe. No repairs, no stains, no odour.

Measures 3 ft 1 in wide by 4 ft 8 in long (37 x 56 in).
