The design reference is Qashqai and Luri, the nomadic weavers of the Zagros mountains and among the most collected of all tribal traditions. Their rugs are built as horizontal registers rather than a single central medallion, each band carrying its own colour and its own small world of animals, cypress trees and flowering shrubs. The panel compartments at the top and bottom of the field descend from the khorjin, the woven saddlebag every nomad family carried. This piece was made by Afghan weavers working in that idiom, drawing the pattern from memory rather than a cartoon, which is why no two are identical. Collectors know this family of design as Gabbeh, Shiraz and Persian tribal.

Five colour bands run through the field: deep madder red, indigo blue, soft grey-blue, sage green and warm saffron gold, each divided by checkerboard and sawtooth lines. Small horses, birds and stags stand between the bands. The cartouche main border in navy alternates rosettes with framed panels, and the inner guards carry cypress trees on ivory. The palette is unusually broad for a rug this size, which makes it read as a collected piece rather than a decorator rug.

Measures 4 ft 11 in wide by 6 ft 9 in long (59 x 81 in).
