The Gabbeh is the rug of the nomad tents of Fars, woven by the Qashqai and Luri tribes and prized for exactly what a city carpet does not have — an open ground, a free hand, and a picture of the weaver's own country rather than a court cartoon. Persian Gabbeh rugs have been sought after in Europe and the United States for decades, and the landscape Gabbeh, with its stacked hills and grazing herds, is the most collected form of it.

This rug reads as a valley seen from above. Hills of deep madder, dusty rose and slate blue fold into one another down the length of the field, two of them opened out into wide meadows scattered with small rosettes in cream, gold and blue. Herds move through every band — goats, horses, dogs and birds, none of them drawn twice — and trees stand at intervals throughout: bare-branched almonds, tall cypresses worked in fine detail, a white sunburst tree at the upper right, and a small palisade fence running along one ridge. Every ground carries a strong horizontal abrash, the natural banding of hand-spun yarn dyed in small batches, which is what gives the hills their depth.

Dense soft pile, excellent quality, no wear, no repairs, no odour. Selvedges intact, original fringe with coloured tassels. At 58 by 81 inches it works as a 5 by 7 — a bedroom under a queen bed, a study, a dining table for four, or a seating area within a larger room. The muted red and blue palette is warm without being loud and suits bohemian, eclectic, traditional and warm modern interiors.
