This small hand-knotted Gabbeh rug was woven in Afghanistan by Turkmen weaving families in the pictorial folk style of the … Read more This small hand-knotted Gabbeh rug was woven in Afghanistan by Turkmen weaving families in the pictorial folk style of the Qashqai and Luri nomads of southern Persia. It is a newly made, unused piece measuring 2'3" x 3'1" (27 x 37 inches) and ships from our showroom in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The field is a lively striped abrash of sky blue, denim blue, teal and moss green, shifting band by band the way hand-spun, small-batch dyed wool naturally does. Two rows of stylized cypress and pine trees in brick red, rust, navy and apricot stand at the top and bottom, a row of small flowering shrubs runs across the green center, and tiny goats and dogs wander between them. Narrow floral guard bands in red, rust and cream frame the field at each end, and braided tassels in blue, green, red and ivory finish the ends. The charm of a Gabbeh is in its spontaneity: the trees are all slightly different, the animals are drawn freehand, and no two pieces are alike.

The pile is thick, soft hand-spun Afghan wool colored with vegetable dyes on a cotton foundation, with a plush hand that is comfortable underfoot. At this size it works as an entry mat, a bedside or bathroom rug, in front of a kitchen sink, or as a nursery or children's room accent, and it holds up to daily use. Minor variations in dimensions and color are part of a handmade rug's character. See less
