This hand-knotted wool rug was woven in northern Afghanistan by Turkmen weaving families working in the Persian Bidjar and Sultanabad … Read more This hand-knotted wool rug was woven in northern Afghanistan by Turkmen weaving families working in the Persian Bidjar and Sultanabad tradition, a design known in the trade as Aryana or Ziegler Bidjar. It is a newly made, unused piece measuring 4'10" x 6'10" (58 x 82 inches), and it ships from our showroom in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The field is a soft slate gray-blue with a lightly abrashed, hand-spun quality that reads as a muted blue in daylight and a warm gray in evening light. Across it runs a borderless Tree of Life garden composition: pairs of stylized cypress trees rise in mirrored columns, surrounded by flowering shrubs, willow branches, rosettes and small palmettes worked in brick red, rust, terracotta, indigo and navy blue, olive green, apricot and ivory. The absence of a border gives the pattern an open, painterly feel that sits comfortably in transitional, modern farmhouse and traditional interiors alike.

The pile is hand-spun Afghan wool dyed with vegetable and natural dyes, knotted on a cotton foundation, with a short kilim end finish and colorful braided tassels at both ends. The pile is dense and low, with the slightly glossy surface of high-lanolin mountain wool that wears well in living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and hallways. Colors are fast and the rug can be used with or without a pad on hardwood, tile or carpet. As with all handmade rugs, minor variations in dimensions and color are part of its character. See less
