The rug reads from the top down like country seen at dawn. A red sun sits low behind a dark ridge in the pale sky; below it a wide sage orchard is planted with flowering almonds, a blue pomegranate tree and small grazing deer; then a cream field, a night-blue band, gold plains, and a deep indigo sky scattered with stars. At the foot a large flowering tree stands on gold ground beside a round fruit tree, with blue water running beneath. Every band carries a strong horizontal abrash, the natural banding of hand-spun yarn dyed in small batches, and no two trees in the whole rug are drawn the same way.

Hand-knotted with a full even pile, no wear, no repairs, no odour. Selvedges are intact and both ends finish in the original fringe with coloured tassels. At 44 by 59 inches the near-square proportion is unusual and useful — it suits a square room, a landing, a nursery, or the space under a small round table, where a standard rectangle leaves awkward gaps.
