A hand-knotted Afghan rug in the Kazak design, woven on a denim blue field with a large madder red medallion at its centre. Hand-spun wool, knotted by hand.
The medallion is an eight-sided panel filled with small hooked cartouches in navy, ivory, sage and gold around a dark central octagon. Four broad serrated leaf panels in salmon and indigo lie diagonally across the blue field around it, and the corners carry hooked spandrels. At each end a deep red panel holds a row of five arched cartouches, each with its own stylised flower, framed by fine gold guard bands. The drawing is crisp throughout and the knotting is noticeably finer than most rugs of this size.
Hand-knotted with a full even pile, no wear, no repairs, no odour. Selvedges are intact and both ends finish in the original fringe with coloured tassels. At 24 by 36 inches it suits an entry, a bedside, a kitchen or a study, and the blue and red palette works in traditional, transitional and eclectic rooms.
