Beautifully proportioned in the Neoclassical and Federal Revival tradition, the chest features three generous drawers framed by an unusual carved geometric border and flanked by slender architectural stiles. A delicate floral motif ornaments the upper rail beneath a subtly shaped and molded top.
The restrained case rests upon four long tapered legs, giving what is substantial storage an unusually light and graceful appearance.
Particularly attractive are the six period brass ring pulls with dimensional floral rosette backplates—jewel-like details against the warm mahogany-toned drawer fronts.
The drawers are traditionally dovetailed and retain clean secondary wood interiors. An original oval metal “IRWIN” manufacturer's plaque remains affixed inside the upper drawer.
Robert W. Irwin was among the distinguished furniture manufacturers working in Grand Rapids during the first half of the 20th century, producing high-quality interpretations of historic European and American furniture. The company operated under the Irwin name from approximately 1919 until 1953.
With its restrained ornament, beautifully aged surface and exceptionally useful scale, this chest works equally well in a traditional interior or as an antique counterpoint in a contemporary room.
