Antique Japanese Sumida Gawa art pottery vase signed by Ishiguro Koko, dating to the Meiji period/turn of the 20th century, approximately c. 1890–1910.
An exceptional example of early Japanese Sumida pottery, this slender vase features highly detailed hand-modeled figures applied in relief against a textured reddish earthenware body. Rich flowing glazes in deep blue, green, brown and cream cascade from the upper portion of the vase, creating the distinctive dramatic appearance associated with Sumida Gawa pottery.
The applied figures are particularly expressive, with individually modeled facial features, hands, feet, garments and other fine details. The vase bears Koko's distinctive applied signature plaque.
