The word Kapala is a Sanskrit term meaning "skull" or "vessel". While traditional kapalas were made from human craniums or sacred animal bones for use as ritual offering bowls, these mask variations are uniquely crafted using natural turtle or tortoise shells. The mask features detailed metal overlays (traditionally nickel-silver or alpaca metal) formed by repoussé and embossing. It is typically inset with polished glass or stone eyes and bordered by a rim of sculpted metal skulls. In Tantric Buddhism, these items symbolize impermanence and the transformation of earthly delusions into perfect wisdom. Historically, they were kept in monasteries or home altars as powerful protective talismans and symbolic offering vessels to wrathful deities.
