Moving among the dynamic bohemian currents of early 1900s Greenwich Village, Gerhardt Schwarz exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago (1921) as well as 'The Paint Box' (1919), a cellar gallery that formed part of a network of numerous galleries and dens where artists, authors and thespians would gather and collaborate.

Schwarz also taught painting at the Art Institute of Chicago alongside his wife, Gertrude Schwarz, who was also a painter. In 1919, Gerhardt Schwarz was awarded the top prize at the annual exhibition of the Art Students' League. See less
