Dating to the late 19th century, circa 1880–1900, this substantial Dutch speculaasplank was deeply hand-carved with an expressive pig. Rows of individual cuts give remarkable texture to its body, while an oversized snout, small legs and tightly curled tail lend the carving the unmistakable character of European folk art.

Speculaasplanken, also known as koekplanken, were traditional wooden molds used to create molded speculaas and other cookies. Dough was pressed into the recessed carving before being released, transferring the image from the wooden mold to the finished cookie.

More than a century later, the same deep carving that made the board functional gives it extraordinary decorative presence.

At nearly 21 inches wide and a full inch deep, this is a substantial piece. Its dark, time-worn surface and wonderfully graphic animal form would be equally at home in a collected kitchen, dining room or layered gallery wall alongside other European antiques and folk art.

Two later metal hangers have been attached to the reverse for horizontal display. Acquired in a small town in the Netherlands.

Measures approximately 11.5” tall, 20.75” wide and 1” deep.

In good antique condition with considerable surface character consistent with age and use. Scratches, finish variation, checking and wear are present throughout. There is an age-related split along the upper edge and additional checking/cracking visible along the lower portion and reverse. Later metal hanging hardware has been attached to the back.
