Published in 1888 as part of “naturgeschichte des mineralreichs für schule und haus” by j. F. Schreiber in esslingen, the two large-format plates combine scientific geology with exceptionally decorative color and graphic detail. Plate i presents an impressive idealized cross-section through a portion of the earth’s crust. Colored strata illustrate successive geological periods and rock formations, while faults, folds, intrusive bodies and volcanic structures extend deep below the mountainous surface. A vertical geological sequence at left accompanies the main diagram. The result is both a scientific representation of late 19th-century geological knowledge and a remarkably modern-looking abstract composition. Plate ii contains a series of individual geological cross-sections through notable landscapes and mountain systems. These include the harz mountains, thuringian forest, erzgebirge, riesengebirge and black forest, together with the eisack valley in south tyrol. Particularly interesting are cross-sections of mount vesuvius from north to south and the geological system between lake erie and lake ontario incorporating niagara falls. The pair provides a fascinating view of how geology, mountain formation, volcanism and stratigraphy were understood and taught during the late 19th century. With their detailed typography, finely drawn geological structures and subdued red, green, blue, yellow and earth-toned coloring, the plates are highly decorative as well as scientifically and historically interesting. These are original antique prints published in 1888, not modern reproductions.
