An exceptionally elegant pair of Italian lounge chairs designed by Paolo Buffa during the 1940s and possibly executed by Fratelli Marelli, one of the specialist cabinetmaking workshops associated with the refined furniture culture of the Cantù area. Crafted from solid cherrywood, the chairs are distinguished by their fluid frames, architectural openwork sides and beautifully balanced proportions. The design perfectly expresses Buffa’s ability to unite the sophistication of traditional Italian cabinetmaking with a lighter and more modern approach to furniture. Every structural element has been shaped to create continuity and movement, giving the chairs a distinctly sculptural presence without appearing visually heavy. The generously curved armrests flow seamlessly into the front legs before rising toward the backrests in a continuous, sinuous line. Their softly modelled profiles are complemented by the open lateral panels, where slender cherrywood elements intersect to form an elegant sequence of elongated diamonds. This geometric cross-bracing introduces a decorative rhythm while allowing light to pass through the structure. A particularly refined detail is the carved cherrywood front rail positioned directly beneath the loose seat cushion. Rather than following a conventional straight line, the rail is shaped into a subtle undulating profile. Its gentle movement echoes the curves of the armrests and upper backrest, creating visual continuity throughout the composition. Even this primarily structural element is treated as an expressive decorative feature, reflecting the sophisticated attention to detail found in Buffa’s work. The backs are equally accomplished. One of the backrests had previously suffered a break. It was professionally reconstructed and structurally restored by a specialist using a careful, conservative approach. The intervention was executed to an exceptionally high standard, ensuring complete stability while retaining as much of the original cherrywood as possible. The upholstery and internal cushioning have been entirely renewed. The chairs are presented in a sophisticated off-white fabric made from 100% cotton, selected for its natural texture, understated appearance and pleasant tactile quality. Its finely woven surface introduces subtle visual depth while allowing the sculptural cherrywood frames to remain the focus of the composition. The newly made seat cushions feature tailored piping around their edges and are constructed using premium high-resilience foam. The carefully selected density provides exceptional comfort, long-term support and excellent shape retention while maintaining the clean proportions of the original design. The softly shaped back cushions provide additional comfort without concealing the elegant outline of the frames. The restrained off-white upholstery creates a refined contrast with the warm, shellac-finished cherrywood, making the chairs exceptionally versatile within both classical and contemporary interiors. Condition The chairs have been completely and professionally restored. The solid cherrywood frames were consolidated and traditionally finished by hand with multiple coats of shellac. One backrest had previously been broken and has been professionally repaired and structurally restored to an exceptionally high standard. The upholstery, internal padding and cushions are entirely new. The chairs have been reupholstered in a high-quality, tightly woven 100% cotton fabric in a soft off-white tone, with premium high-resilience foam selected for superior comfort and durability. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
