The stool features a thick, sculpturally shaped seat supported by three slightly splayed and tapered wooden legs. Its simple construction and expressive proportions are characteristic of French rural furniture and art populaire of the mid-20th century. Particularly attractive is the beautifully aged surface. Decades of use have created a deep warm-brown patina, with visible wear, small marks, scratches and tonal variations throughout the wood. Rather than detracting from the piece, these traces of age emphasize its authentic, primitive character. The combination of the substantial seat, three-legged construction and restrained geometry gives the stool a distinctly sculptural quality that works particularly well within Brutalist, Wabi-Sabi, rustic and modern interiors. Tripod stools have a long tradition in European vernacular furniture; their three-point construction provided natural stability even on uneven rural floors. Similar French examples from the 1950s are now appreciated not only as functional furniture but also as sculptural objects and examples of European folk design. Condition Good original vintage condition. Strong and structurally sound. Beautiful original patina with visible wear, scratches, marks and color variations consistent with approximately 70 years of age and use. We consider the aged surface an important part of the stool's character and have intentionally preserved it.
