A richly detailed authorized Louvre Chalcographie impression of Eugène Bléry’s 1838 French landscape commonly cataloged in English as “Bridge at Fourvoirie.” Printed from Bléry’s original copperplate, the composition depicts a rustic stone bridge, waterside buildings and a wooded stream beneath the limestone heights of the Dauphiné near Grenoble.
Bléry draws the eye from the rocky foreground toward the bridge’s deeply shadowed arch and along the reflective watercourse beyond. Weathered rural structures settle into the left bank, dense trees rise through the center, and pale Alpine cliffs close the distance beneath an expansive sky.
Minute hatching and crosshatching distinguish stone, timber, foliage, water and exposed rock with remarkable precision. Drypoint enriches the darkest passages, particularly beneath the trees and bridge, while roulette contributes subtle tonal texture. The resulting contrast between intricate foreground detail, dense woodland and luminous distant cliffs gives the composition both depth and atmosphere.
The sheet is hand-titled across the lower margin: “(Dauphiné.) À Fourvoirie près la Gde Chartreuse, de Grenoble.” At lower left, it is hand-inscribed “E. Bléry del. et sculp.,” identifying Bléry as both the designer and engraver. The handwritten date “1838” corresponds with the museum-documented creation date of the composition and original copperplate. Additional handwritten notations include a faint inscription appearing to read approximately “3. V. 10.” and the number “121” at lower right.
These marginal inscriptions are visibly handwritten rather than printed from the plate. Although they contribute considerably to the historical character of the sheet, the handwriting has not been independently authenticated as being in Bléry’s own hand.
The center of the lower margin bears the crisp circular blindstamp “MUSÉE DU LOUVRE – CHALCOGRAPHIE.” This embossed mark identifies the sheet as an authorized impression produced by the Louvre’s historic copperplate workshop, which preserves engraved plates and issues hand-pulled impressions from them.
The blindstamp confirms the Louvre Chalcographie workshop origin but does not establish the precise printing date. The handwritten “1838” records the documented date of Bléry’s original composition and copperplate; it should not be interpreted as proof that this particular impression was printed in 1838. The present sheet is therefore cataloged conservatively as a later authorized impression, probably printed circa the 1970s–1990s.
Museum documentation provides strong confirmation of the work’s identification. The Philadelphia Museum of Art catalogs the composition as “Bridge at Fourvoirie” and identifies the technique as etching and drypoint with roulette. The British Museum documents another impression under the corresponding French title and records it as an etching on chine collé.
The visible image appears to be printed on a thin paper layer applied to a heavier support, consistent with the chine-collé construction documented for the British Museum impression. Because this example has not been removed from its frame, its paper construction is described as apparent rather than definitively confirmed.
The print is presented beneath glass in an elegant professional gallery treatment. A broad ivory mat is articulated by narrow charcoal-gray and muted-gold inner borders, while the reeded antiqued silver-toned frame supplies a restrained architectural finish. The layered presentation complements the image’s finely worked neutral palette and gives the historic subject a polished, designer-ready presence.
For an interior designer or collector, the work offers the cultivated character of a French landscape gathered during European travel. Its arched stone bridge, wooded waterway and Alpine setting would be especially effective in a paneled library, French Country sitting room, traditional study, English Country bedroom, collected entry or Continental-inspired gallery wall.
Display it above a writing desk, small commode or console, or layer it among architectural engravings, antique maps and landscape studies. Its nuanced charcoal, ivory, muted-gold and antiqued-silver palette coordinates naturally with dark wood furniture, aged brass, stoneware, leather, transferware, linen and time-softened textiles.
A compelling authorized Louvre Chalcographie impression combining Bléry’s precise Romantic draftsmanship, extensive handwritten marginal inscriptions, the authority of the Louvre’s historic copperplate workshop and an exceptionally decorative custom-framed presentation.

The impression remains visually strong, with crisp fine lines, rich dark passages and well-preserved tonal variation. No obvious tears, punctures, major creases, structural losses, repairs or significant abrasion were observed within the visible portion of the artwork. Moderate foxing and scattered brown-gray speckling are visible, particularly across the sky and upper paper field. Generalized age-related toning and minor surface variation are also present. These characteristics are noticeable upon close examination but do not obscure the composition or compromise its overall decorative presentation. The handwritten artist credit, title, date and additional marginal notations remain legible. The embossed Musée du Louvre–Chalcographie blindstamp is crisp and clearly visible at the center of the lower margin. The antiqued silver-toned frame displays age-appropriate rubbing, finish variation, small scratches, edge wear and scattered surface marks. The layered matting shows minor age-related variation, and the framing glass remains intact. The reverse retains an older brown-paper dust cover and black hanging wire. The dust cover displays discoloration, rippling, scattered punctures and small tears, including a larger tear with localized paper loss near the upper-left corner and minor losses near the lower corners. The artwork has not been removed from its framed presentation. Consequently, the complete sheet, verso and areas concealed beneath the mat have not been examined. Please review all photographs closely, particularly the paper surface, foxing, handwritten inscriptions, blindstamp, matting, frame edges and reverse. less
