Made by Delano Studios of Setauket, Long Island in 1962, this hand-colored ceramic tray reproduces Charles Crombie’s wonderfully satirical interpretation of Rule XVII: “Any loose impediments may be removed from the putting-green.” A golfer pushes a wheelbarrow crowded with decidedly human “impediments,” while another golfer looks on.

The illustration comes from Crombie’s celebrated Rules of Golf imagery created for Perrier, marrying early-20th-century British sporting humor with the French mineral-water company’s advertising history. This later Delano Studios interpretation gives the image another layer of midcentury character.

The cream ceramic tray is edged in gold tone, with its greens, reds and yellows hand colored against Crombie’s black-line illustration. The reverse carries the Delano Studios crest, copyright 1962 and “Hand Colored.”

Small enough to tuck into a collected bookshelf or study, it would also make a terrific catchall on a desk, bar or entry table — particularly in a room where sporting art is allowed to have a sense of humor. Measures 7.5” long, 5.4” deep and 1” tall.

In good vintage condition with age-related surface wear. Gilded rim shows wear and discoloration in areas. Light surface wear is present, with discoloration and marks to the underside. See less
