The … Read more A wonderfully whimsical vintage Italian majolica cachepot, modeled as a large white rabbit nestled beside a beautifully sculpted cabbage.

The rabbit is rendered in creamy white glazed ceramic with soft pink inner ears and hand-painted facial details, while the adjoining planter takes the form of overlapping cabbage leaves in layers of mottled leafy greens. Raised veins, curled edges and painterly variations in the glaze give the foliage wonderful dimension and the unmistakable character of traditional Italian majolica.

At 9 inches tall and 9.5 inches wide, this is a particularly substantial example—the scale gives it considerably more decorative presence than the small rabbit planters and figurines more commonly encountered. The cabbage compartment is generously sized for use as a cachepot or planter, but the piece is equally charming empty as a sculptural centerpiece.

A natural fit with Italian cabbageware and lettuceware, Palm Beach and Regency interiors, English country rooms, collected traditional spaces, or a playful grandmillennial scheme. It would be wonderful filled with an orchid, maidenhair fern, herbs or spring bulbs, and especially appealing for an Easter or spring table without being limited to seasonal use.

The underside is stamped “Made in Italy.” The softly crackled glaze visible throughout is consistent with the character of glazed majolica. Please see photographs for condition and detail.
