On our hands is a unique and unusual piece of early 20th Century (or earlier) metal mule or donkey. We believe it to be brass—we deduced this from the portion around the thighs that are shinning through, caused by the rubbing movement of the legs. Both front and back legs are kinetic/articulated. The mule was originally painted red as evidently seen. The bridle was outlined in white.
Now, as far as design, it's beautiful. We especially love those ears, but all its details are well drawn and executed. And the patina, that's developed on it, is also gorgeous; something only the years could have developed.
But the big question remains; what was its purpose of creation. The dealers we consulted with suggested it to be a component of a shooting gallery target, from a carnival or fairground. If that was the case then it would have been for bean bag style throwing, than bullets shot at it. Or it could have been a one off Folk Art creation. Or a toy a metalsmith made for his child. For now it's a bit of a mystery, though we lean on the first suggestion.
