(1831–1923) and etched by French artist and printmaker Théophile-Narcisse Chauvel (1831–1909/10).

The expansive pastoral scene depicts the wooded banks of the River Thames beneath a dramatic cloud-filled sky, rendered with exceptionally fine etched linework and softly colored in muted blues, greens and warm earth tones.

The lower margin identifies “Painted by B.W. Leader R.A.” and “Etched by Ch. Chauvel,” with the 1907 copyright and publisher information for Arthur Tooth & Sons.

Presented in substantial custom framing with a warm burl-wood-look outer frame, gilt detailing, layered deep green matting and a narrow gilt liner. The rich green and gold presentation complements the landscape beautifully and gives the piece considerable presence.

An unusually large, decorator-ready antique work particularly well suited to an English country, traditional, collected, library or study interior.

Condition: Good antique/vintage condition. Artwork presents beautifully. Frame shows scattered age-appropriate surface wear and small areas of finish loss, including several localized chips, as photographed. No restoration or touch-up has been performed. See less
