Monumental “Delta” textile designed by Wolf Bauer for Knoll International in 1967, presented in a striking black and natural colorway. Measuring approximately 47 inches wide by 107 inches long, this exceptionally large surviving textile showcases the dramatic scale and graphic quality of Bauer’s original design.
The abstract composition features sweeping organic forms rendered in deep black against a warm natural ground, with linear details creating a bold, almost architectural presence. At nearly nine feet long, the textile works beautifully as a large-scale wall hanging, fiber art installation, or architectural textile.
The original selvage remains intact and is clearly marked “1967 © Knoll International Ltd. Delta Designed by Wolf Bauer,” providing direct documentation of the designer, manufacturer, pattern, and date.
Also retained is the original Knoll International paper tag, identifying the textile as Delta, K 5400/2, Schwarz (black), 100% Baumwolle (cotton) and noting an approximately 88 cm pattern repeat.
One end of the textile has a separately applied fabric backing/reinforcement secured with multiple rows of stitching. This appears to have been intended to facilitate hanging or display and suggests the textile may have previously been prepared as a showroom or presentation panel, although its original installation history is unknown.
Wolf Bauer created Delta as part of his celebrated late-1960s textile work for Knoll International. Its oversized repeat, expressive organic abstraction, and high-contrast palette exemplify the adventurous graphic direction of Knoll textiles during the period.
An impressive surviving example of 1960s modernist textile and fiber art, particularly desirable for its substantial scale, intact manufacturer’s selvage, original Knoll International tag, and apparent period hanging/display treatment.
