On offer is a colorful landscape that captures an iconic Bay Area landmark, namely the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco.
SUBJECT & TIMING: The focal point of the composition is the magnificent Main Gate, or “Main Portal,” of the Japanese Tea Garden. Built for the 1894 California Midwinter International Exposition by master Japanese craftsmen (admirably, since it survived two city-destroying earthquakes), the gate is celebrated for its intricate wooden joinery and heavy, multi-layered tiled roof. Farnsworth meticulously renders the geometry of the those roof tiles and the open, welcoming entryway using sharp black ink lines.
The timing of the painting—early April—is perfect. This is the exact window when the garden's famous cherry blossoms come into full bloom. Farnsworth captures these erupting white and soft pink blossoms on the left using a heavy, textured application of white pastel or gouache, giving the trees a tangible, cloud-like volume against the dark green foliage.
STYLE: Painted on April 5, 2008, just two weeks after “Signed Landscape of Oakland’s Historic Lake Merritt, by S.K. Farnsworth,” which is being offered separately, this work solidifies a clear pattern in S.K. Farnsworth’s artistic practice. The explicit addition of "PLEIN-AIR" in the bottom right corner confirms that the artist was painting these live on-site, capturing the region's historic public spaces in real-time.
The Japanese Garden work offered here, when considered with the artist’s Lake Marritt piece, as well as the 2014 fractionally larger paintings done of Ghirardelli Square from the water, and a sunset in Marin County, each being sold separately, underscore Farnsworth’s deliberate approach as an artist documenting public landmarks around the San Francisco Bay.
TECHNIQUE: Farnsworth layers deep, dramatic textures (like the hatched blue pastel sky and stone steps) underneath rigid, structural ink outlines. This stylistic combination heavily echoes the work of a seasoned illustrator or printmaker who values clean architectural form just as much as natural scenery.
The signature, location text, and date are perfectly laid out in that same signature wide-set, hand-lettered drafting style across the bottom margin, treating the text as an integrated graphic element of the overall composition.
ARTIST: S.K. Farnsworth is a highly skilled contemporary independent artist and regional landscape painter. While not a historically digitized 20th-century master, Farnsworth captured localized cityscapes and maritime environments around the Bay Area. The artist relied heavily in this work on direct observation of light, industrial shapes and coastal geography to shape a distinct, stylized impressionism.
Signature/Maker’s Mark: Bottom left corner (photo #7). Unframed dimensions: 9 inches high x 12 inches wide.
