Standing an impressive 71 inches tall and … Read more Monumental sculptural floor lamp by Fusion Specialties, Inc. of Broomfield, Colorado, circa 1990s. Standing an impressive 71 inches tall and approximately 21 inches wide, the lamp has a commanding architectural presence and functions as much as a piece of sculpture as it does lighting.

The dramatically tapered body is completely wrapped in substantial golden-brown rope, tightly wound to create a richly textured surface. The exaggerated vessel-like form narrows toward the floor and expands into broad rounded shoulders before terminating in a wrapped neck.

A brushed metal stem rises from the body and supports the lamp socket and black metal shade mount/frame. The lamp is sold with the shade mount as pictured but does not include a shade, allowing the new owner to select a shade appropriate for the intended interior. The juxtaposition of natural rope, brushed metal and blackened steel gives the piece an unusual combination of Organic Modern, Industrial and Postmodern design.

The lamp retains its Fusion Specialties, Inc., Broomfield, Colorado manufacturer’s label beneath the upper portion of the rope-wrapped body. Founded in the 1980s, Fusion Specialties became particularly known for its innovative mannequins, sculptural retail displays, fixtures, props and custom fabrication for the visual-merchandising industry.

Because of Fusion Specialties’ extensive work producing custom pieces for commercial interiors and retail environments, this lamp may have originated as part of a specialized interior or visual-merchandising installation. We have not, however, identified the specific original commission or retailer.

An exceptionally unusual piece of late-20th-century American design with tremendous scale and texture. Particularly well suited to a large living space, loft, hotel, restaurant, retail environment or other interior requiring a substantial sculptural lighting element.

Condition: Vintage condition with age-appropriate wear. The rope displays natural variations, surface wear and some loose fibers consistent with age and use. The exposed metal components exhibit scratches, scuffs, marks and other signs of use. Manufacturer’s label remains present. Sold with the shade mount/frame as pictured; shade is not included.
