Weighing an impressive approximately 15 pounds, the pot has a solid, substantial presence that speaks to its utilitarian origins and traditional craftsmanship. Constructed from thick sections of solid wood and reinforced by heavy solid iron bands, the barrel retains its original wooden lid with carrying handle and wooden plug. Originally made as a functional wine making and storage vessel, today it is a soulful piece of Chinese folk art with tremendous character. Its primitive construction, honest materials and richly weathered patina make it particularly appealing in a country, rustic, wabi-sabi or contemporary interior—equally compelling displayed alone or alongside antique pottery, baskets and other collected objects.
