An American seascape in oil on academy board, titled "Romance of the Sea," by Leonid Gechtoff. The composition shows breaking surf over dark rock outcroppings under a pale, cloud-streaked sky, painted with heavy impasto brushwork in the waves and foam. The frame is a wide, ribbed period giltwood frame. Gechtoff painted this a decade after settling in Philadelphia, following a path that took him from Odessa through Cairo, Holland, and Manila before he found his footing on the American coast.
