The substantial four-sided ceramic column is finished in warm gold leaf and individually decorated across every face. Trailing vines, serrated leaves, curling tendrils and pendant clusters of grapes travel around the gently rounded corners, allowing the botanical composition to remain visually engaging from every angle. Visible brush texture gives the ivory decoration the character of handwork rather than a mechanically uniform pattern.

The gold-leaf ground has mellowed beautifully, with subtle tonal shifts, fine surface texture and the softly reflective glow that makes vintage gilded objects so effective in layered interiors. Against it, the ivory grapevines read almost as botanical silhouettes—graphic from across a room and more nuanced at close range.

A carved wooden cap crowns the ceramic body with a radiating leaf or sunburst pattern. The tall brass-toned neck rises to a single rotary socket and removable harp. Below, the column is elevated on an architectural pierced-wood plinth worked with an interlocking fret motif. A concealed circular metal ballast gives the narrow base reassuring weight and stability.

The lamp belongs visually to the European Chinoiserie decorator-lighting tradition that paired ceramic bodies with Asian-inspired pierced wood mounts and Western electrical fittings. A closely related construction appears on another vine-decorated ceramic lamp cataloged as European Chinoiserie, while documented Nardini, Marbro and Frederick Cooper lamps demonstrate the broader mid-century taste for ceramic, gold leaf, botanical ornament and carved mounts. No exact model or maker’s mark has been located, so this example is offered responsibly as unattributed.

For a designer, its strength lies in the contrast between disciplined architecture and romantic surface decoration. The slender five-inch footprint supplies height, richness and a glint of gold without consuming valuable tabletop space—ideal for a writing desk, bedside chest, drinks table, small console, library table or bookcase cabinet.

The restrained gold-and-ivory palette layers naturally with lacquerware, mahogany, tortoiseshell tones, framed botanicals, antique brass, blue-and-white porcelain, chintz and pleated textiles. A petite pleated ivory silk shade would heighten its English Traditional character; warm parchment would give it a quieter architectural presence; and a gathered patterned shade would create a more expressive Grandmillennial finish.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING
The estate from which the lamp was acquired identified it as a vintage ceramic lamp. The visible construction and surface characteristics are consistent with that description.

The socket shell is stamped “PRESS,” an operating instruction for releasing the housing rather than a manufacturer’s name. No definitive maker’s label, model number or country-of-origin mark has been observed.

The closest located constructional comparison is a vine-decorated ceramic lamp with a carved-and-pierced wood base, cataloged by a specialist Chairish seller as European Chinoiserie and measuring 22 inches to its socket. The shared vocabulary supports the European Chinoiserie classification but does not establish a common maker or country of manufacture.

The circa-1960s–1970s date is an informed estimate based on the gold-leaf-finished ceramic column, carved Asian-inspired mounts, socket and harp construction, weighted base, surviving cord configuration and related period examples. It should not be interpreted as a documented factory date.

Research did not locate sufficient evidence for attribution to Marbro, Frederick Cooper, Nardini Studios or another named manufacturer.

CONSTRUCTION DETAILS
The ceramic column is secured through a central threaded rod. A large circular metal ballast is fitted inside the open underside of the wooden plinth, contributing weight and stability.

The brown parallel cord exits through the central assembly and terminates in a two-prong clamp-on attachment plug.
