The left print shows a seated warrior figure in patterned armor before a screened interior with a woman seated at a writing desk. The right depicts a group of samurai and attendants in an animated confrontation, one figure looming above the others in elaborate court dress. Both prints include cartouches with Japanese text identifying the actors and roles, and are matted and framed in custom matching black lacquer-style frames with gilt trim.

These were acquired from The Victor Waddington Galleries, which operated in Dublin in the 1920s. The backing paper includes an inscription indicating "Both: Toyokuni/Kunisada 1857”, attributing the works to prominent 19th-century Japanese print artist Utagawa Kunisada, who also worked under the name Toyokuni III. Kunisada was revered by his contemporaries as the foremost print designer of his time.
