Beneath a silvery sky, pedestrians carrying umbrellas cross the historic square as its stately architecture recedes toward the soaring spire of the Basilica of Saint Epvre. Reflections shimmer across the wet pavement, while loosely painted figures and passing vehicles give the scene the vitality of daily life continuing through the rain.
Salvaggio captures the familiar grandeur of Nancy through atmosphere rather than exacting detail. His rhythmic brushwork and softened palette of slate gray, blue, ochre and moss green convey the shifting light with remarkable sensitivity. The architecture emerges through layers of expressive paint, while small touches of color animate the square and draw the eye through the composition. There is romance in the misty air, the glistening pavement and the procession of umbrellas beneath the venerable buildings of this historic French city.
Born in Sicily in 1953, José Salvaggio moved to France at an early age and established himself as an accomplished painter of landscapes and urban views. He studied in Paris with Paul Anderbouhr and later attended the school of Émilie Simon, where he worked with Claude Marin. Known for painting directly from life, Salvaggio is particularly admired for his ability to capture changing light, seasonal color and the immediate character of a place through confident, Impressionistic brushwork. His paintings have been exhibited internationally and are held in private and public collections throughout Europe, North America and Japan.
Signed Salvaggio in the lower right. Presented in a handsome gilded frame with a linen liner, the painting is ready to display.
