The vases are distinguished by their extensive use of luminous translucent red enamel, a technically demanding color that gives the surfaces exceptional depth, warmth, and brilliance.


Translucent red was among the most difficult enamels to successfully produce. Achieving an even, jewel like color over such large areas required extraordinary control of the enamel composition, temperature, and repeated firing process. Slight variations in heat could cause the red to darken, cloud, crack, or lose its transparency. Large Meiji period cloisonné works retaining broad fields of translucent red enamel are consequently rare and highly desirable.


Each vase is decorated with shield shaped panels containing animated dragons twisting among stylized clouds and flames. The dragons are rendered in tones of green, yellow, aubergine, brown, and red against finely mottled pale grounds. Complementary panels depict magnificent phoenixes with dramatically sweeping tail feathers, symbols of virtue, renewal, prosperity, and imperial authority.


The rounded shoulders are densely decorated with phoenixes in flight amid scrolling clouds, foliage, and intricate ornamental details. Elaborate pendant borders encircle the flaring necks, resembling suspended jewels set against the brilliant translucent red ground. The interiors are finished in vivid blue enamel, providing a striking contrast to the warm ruby colored exteriors.


The complex wirework, unusual palette, dense ornamentation, and combination of dragons, phoenixes, and translucent enamel are characteristic of the ambitious decorative works associated with the Honda School. Likely created for the international market around 1890, the pair reflects the remarkable technical experimentation and artistic refinement achieved by Japanese cloisonné makers at the height of the Meiji period.
