Standing 22 … Read more A monumental Japanese cloisonné enamel and ceramic vase dating to the late Meiji period, circa 1890 to 1912. Standing 22 1/4 inches tall, this impressive vase is approximately three inches taller than the related example and was probably produced by, or closely associated with, the celebrated Kinkozan Studio of Kyoto.


The vase was created using the rare technique known as totai shippo, in which cloisonné enamel decoration is applied to a ceramic body rather than a traditional copper foundation. Fine wires form individual decorative cells across the pottery surface, which are filled with colored enamels and carefully fired. The differing reactions of ceramic and enamel to heat made this a technically demanding process, particularly on a vessel of such considerable scale.


Large shaped panels decorate the front and reverse. One presents a lush garden filled with pheasants and smaller birds among flowering branches, chrysanthemums, peonies, and dense foliage. The opposing panel depicts an elegant gathering of cranes beneath pine trees and flowering plants. The naturalistic scenes are rendered in a refined palette and enriched with delicate gilding.


A vibrant turquoise ground surrounds the principal panels and is covered with minute scrolling motifs, scattered blossoms, and circular medallions containing peonies, irises, lilies, and other seasonal flowers. The elongated neck is densely decorated with cascading foliage, butterflies, jewel inspired ornament, and intricate geometric borders. Additional flowers and birds decorate the widely flaring mouth and pedestal foot.


The monumental proportions, richly detailed pictorial scenes, extensive ornamentation, and successful union of ceramic painting with cloisonné enamel make this a particularly striking example of late Meiji period totai shippo.
