The figure rests atop a substantial rectangular pedestal decorated with finely incised floral and traditional Asian motifs.

The sculpture is carved from warm russet-brown soapstone with a softly polished surface and attractive aged patina. Particularly desirable is the surviving partial Gemstone Fan Co. paper label on the underside. A virtually identical sculpture retaining the Gemstone Fan Co. NY label has been documented in the decorative arts market.

Believed to date to the early to mid-20th century, approximately 1920s–1940s. The combination of the serene Guanyin figure, expressive guardian lion and carved architectural pedestal makes this an especially appealing example of vintage Chinese decorative stone carving.

Condition: Very good antique/vintage condition with surface wear, minor scratches, variations in coloration and other signs of age and handling consistent with an older hand-carved stone object.
