Standing an impressive 19 inches tall, the vase was probably produced by, or closely associated with, the celebrated Kinkozan Studio of Kyoto.


The vase was created using the rare technique known as totai shippo, meaning cloisonné enamel applied to a ceramic body rather than the traditional copper or metal foundation. Fine wires were arranged on the pottery surface to form individual decorative cells, which were then filled with colored enamels and carefully fired. Because ceramic and enamel expand and react differently under intense heat, producing totai shippo required considerable technical skill. Large and successfully fired examples such as this are particularly impressive.


The body is decorated with large shaped panels depicting birds amid pine branches, peonies, chrysanthemums, and other flowering plants. One scene features a brilliantly colored pheasant surrounded by luxuriant blossoms, while the reverse presents an abundant botanical composition animated by birds in flight. Delicate gilding enriches the landscapes and gives the cream colored grounds a warm, luminous appearance.


The principal panels are surrounded by a vibrant turquoise field filled with minute repeating motifs and numerous circular floral medallions. Butterflies, tassels, scrolling ornament, formal blossoms, and intricate geometric borders decorate the tall neck, flaring mouth, rounded shoulders, and spreading foot. Even the interior of the mouth is carefully decorated with scrolling foliage and stylized red flowers.


The monumental scale, sophisticated composition, extensive ornamentation, and successful union of Satsuma ceramic painting with cloisonné enamel make this a striking example of Japanese decorative art from the Meiji period.
