Unlike budget reproductions, these feature historical provenance with the Imperial Hotel Tokyo.
Both chairs were obtained by the Director of International Public Relations, Art and Interior Design Consultant, Nacio Cronin during the Hotel's renovation in mid 20th century.
The original metallic provenance tag on the chair, identifies them as Imperial Hotel Inventory. The base support is a heavy cross design that is typical of Naga Teioki Co., Ltd. as the manufacturer.
The characters translate to “President” or “CEO”., which indicates these chairs were produced for executive chambers and implies this pair did not come from standard guest rooms, but was designated for executive suites, the board room or the President’s private offices.
Further translation: Equipment/Asset Number #11540077 which is a unique corporate inventory tracking ID.
Both chairs are identical in construction, upholstery and dimensions. The wood under structure of heavy cross pieces exemplifies unique, excellent and sturdy craftsmanship. The provenance tagged chair has minimal scuffs on some edges, the non-tagged chair shows more wear and has a few more scuffs with one small upholstery tear on the bottom right rear under side. It is common for a manufacturer to tag only 1 chair since the other identical chair(s) is obvious.
The seat cushions have metal “breather” grommets on the sides to allow air to escape - a manufacturing technique utilized in mid-century-modern high-end hotel furnishings. The high-grade commercial vinyl is crisp and tailored, making these incredibly rare pieces architectural hospitality history.
These chairs feature clean architectural lines that capture the elevated mid-century aesthetic of the hotel’s legendary post-war iterations. Perfectly scaled and exceptionally sturdy.
They are wisely upholstered in the original, vintage commercial-grade vinyl. This material was highly favored for high-traffic luxury interiors. This era is known for durability and a sleek uniform look. It features a classic luster that pairs beautifully with the chair’s heavy cross wood frame.
The beautiful dark Espresso of the original vinyl upholstery, is intact and without deviation. The solid frames showcase high end manufacturing. Wonderful vintage condition given age and historical use.
