Antique carved oak architectural panel wall art featuring an expressive grotesque mask surrounded by sweeping foliate and acanthus scrollwork. Dating approximately to the late 19th or early 20th century, the panel displays the dramatic Renaissance Revival ornament frequently used on period cabinets, sideboards, overmantels and architectural interiors.
The deeply carved central mask is framed by large symmetrical scrolling elements and carved acanthus foliage, all executed against the richly grained oak panel. The warm aged finish and dimensional carving give the piece wonderful Old World character.
The reverse construction suggests the panel was originally incorporated into a larger piece of furniture or architectural woodwork and was later repurposed as decorative wall art. A wire hanger has been added to the reverse for display.

Condition: Antique condition with age-related surface wear, scratches, old holes, edge wear/losses and wood separation/splitting, particularly along the lower edge. The reverse shows evidence consistent with the panel having been removed from a larger furniture or architectural element. Later hanging wire is attached to the reverse.
