Traditionally known as … Read more A large victorian staffordshire glazed earthenware figure depicting christ at the column, made in england circa 1860. Traditionally known as the flagellation or christ at the pillar, the subject represents a scene from the passion of christ.

the figure shows christ standing beside a tall rectangular column, his head inclined and his hands bound behind his back. It is fully modelled in the round, with detailed modelling of the torso, back, shoulders, arms and legs.

the substantial shaped base is decorated with a large shell motif and scrolling rocaille ornament. A small firing vent at the rear of the hollow column is characteristic of the construction of large staffordshire earthenware figures of the period.

the model is documented in a. & n. Harding, victorian staffordshire figures 1835–1875, book 2, p. 22, fig. 1699, where it is identified as the flagellation of christ.

centred on the potteries around stoke-on-trent, staffordshire became one of the most important international centres of ceramic manufacture in the 18th and 19th centuries. Its workshops and factories played a central role in the history of english pottery and produced a wide range of distinctive victorian figures.

condition:
age-related crazing to the glaze. Some paint loss and flaking to the hair and red-orange drapery. Minor flaking to the paint on the hands. Otherwise in good antique condition.
