An exceptional mid-20th century Danish Royal Copenhagen decorative stoneware lidded jar, designed by the renowned Danish artist and ceramicist Jais Nielsen. The covered vessel is beautifully decorated with a richly sculptural biblical scene rendered in relief, demonstrating the expressive artistic character and exceptional craftsmanship associated with Royal Copenhagen's important 20th-century ceramic production.
The exterior features a detailed narrative composition with biblical imagery modeled in high relief, creating a wonderfully dimensional and visually engaging surface. The vessel is finished with an attractive Sung-inspired glaze, which beautifully enhances the sculptural decoration and gives the stoneware a distinctive depth and richness. The combination of the expressive figural imagery, refined glaze, and substantial form makes this an especially striking decorative object.
Measuring approximately 11.25 inches high, 8 inches wide, and 8 inches deep, this lidded jar has a wonderful presence and would make an elegant addition to a collection of Royal Copenhagen ceramics, Scandinavian decorative arts, or religious and figural pottery. It would display beautifully on a mantel, console, cabinet, or bookshelf. The underside is stamped with the Royal Copenhagen Denmark mark and bears the maker's mark of Jais Nielsen, further confirming its authenticity and artistic provenance. Jais Nielsen was known for his distinctive sculptural approach to ceramics, and this piece is a wonderful example of his expressive and highly decorative work for Royal Copenhagen.
The jar is in very good condition, with minor wear consistent with age and use. It is free from chips, cracks, or repairs.
