This original early 18th-century leaf carries two separate Madagascar engravings on opposite sides: the Dutch VOC trading post at Fombetokke and, on the reverse, a burial ground identified in the publication as belonging to Malagasy elites. The pairing makes the sheet more than a single colonial view, preserving two very different kinds of evidence from the same historical account.

ABOUT THE WORK:
Valentijn’s Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën was an ambitious illustrated record of the Dutch overseas world, assembled from his own years in the East Indies as well as information available through Dutch East India Company networks. On this surviving leaf, the commercial presence of the VOC at Fombetokke sits back-to-back with an image documenting local burial practice, giving the sheet a broader historical reach than either engraving has on its own.
Sold loose and unframed. Custom archival matting or framing may be arranged for an additional charge; because both sides are illustrated, a double-sided presentation can also be discussed.
