A little teapot with a lot of personality. Made in England in the nineteenth century, it has a plump bullet shape, a flat strap handle and a neat disc knop, and every surface is painted in the Imari palette of iron-red, deep blue and gold. On each side a pale yellow Chinese pagoda hung with bells sits in an oval reserve above blue and gilt rockwork and a sea of scale-pattern waves.

Around the reserves, flame-like leaves in red and blue sweep outward between big red and gold blooms, and the whole ground is filled with a fine scrolling foliage in pale yellow that reads almost like a printed chintz. The spout carries red leaf sprays and the handle and knop are lined in gold.

This is a teapot for display as much as for use: on a kitchen dresser or open shelving among blue and white, in a cabinet of English Imari, or on a side table in a sitting room with chinoiserie wallpaper, red lacquer or tortoiseshell. It works equally well in a traditional country house scheme or as a bright accent in a modern room.

The Imari style came to Britain on Japanese export porcelain and by the Regency had been adopted by Derby, Worcester, Spode and the Staffordshire potters; pagoda reserves like these belong to the same chinoiserie taste that furnished the Brighton Pavilion.

Condition:
Good antique condition. The enamels are bright and the gilding well preserved, with some age-related wear and crazing to the handle.
