The rectangular ceramic box features a warm brown exterior with a glossy black glazed interior. The lid is especially distinctive, with a heavily textured white crackle surface scattered with raised, jewel-like accents in cobalt blue, turquoise, green, red and earthy tones—giving the piece an almost abstract mosaic or fused-glass appearance.

The underside is impressed “LEROY BENJAMIN / HILL SIDE / CALIFORNIA / © 1962,” identifying the artist, studio location and year of production.

Originally designed as a cigarette box, it also makes an excellent decorative dresser box, jewelry or trinket box, keepsake box, desk accessory or Mid-Century Modern art object.
