An extraordinary and highly decorative English Rococo carved and giltwood overmantel mirror, distinguished by its monumental scale, elaborate openwork carving and dramatic pair of opposing ho-ho birds. Measuring an impressive 67 inches wide × 60 inches high, the mirror was conceived as a commanding architectural statement for a grand interior.
The exceptionally elaborate frame incorporates deeply carved acanthus foliage, sweeping C-scrolls, rocaille and shell ornament, floral sprays and extensive pierced decoration. The magnificent crest is centered by diamond-pattern latticework, surrounded by scrolling foliage and flowers, while the two sculptural exotic birds dramatically anchor the upper corners. The sides continue with richly carved foliage and openwork before terminating in shell-like forms above the shaped lower rail.
The design belongs to the exuberant English George III Rococo tradition associated with the published designs of Thomas Chippendale, Thomas Johnson and Matthias Lock during the mid-18th century.
Examination of the reverse reveals substantial traditional timber construction, separately carved and joined decorative elements, hand-worked pierced lattice and aged gesso and gilding layers.
Based upon its design and construction, the mirror is probably late 18th century, circa 1760–1800, although a later Chippendale Revival date remains possible. Needs expert authentication to confirm!
The mirror retains considerable historic character, including aged gilding, rubbing, losses, cracking, old repairs, restoration and later alterations. The mirror plate displays attractive age-related silvering and atmospheric deterioration.
A spectacular statement piece of exceptional scale and presence.
