Hand-spun wool, knotted by hand.

Across the middle of the rug a line of animals walks a golden path: horses, goats and small dogs in procession, with a peacock standing among the bare-branched trees above them. This is the kuch, the seasonal migration, when the nomad family moves its herds between winter and summer pasture. Gabbeh weavers put their own lives into these rugs, and that procession is the weaver's own household on the move.

Around it the seasons run at once. The green band is an orchard in leaf with a dense flowering thicket and a tall red cypress. The red bands above and below are scattered with small blossoms and slender flowering trees. The indigo band at the foot carries white blossom against the dark, so the rug reads as spring at the bottom and high summer at the top.

Condition: hand-knotted with a full even pile throughout, no wear, no repairs, no odour. Selvedges are intact and both ends finish in the original hand-tied fringe with coloured tassels.

Measuring 24 by 36 inches, it suits an entry, a bedside, a kitchen, a bathroom or a child's room, and it layers well over jute or sisal. A rug this size and this detailed also hangs well — mounted on a wall it reads as a small woven picture, which is how many of these end up being used. See less
