Hand-spun wool, knotted by hand.

The whole scene is held in six square feet and it rewards close looking. A flowering tree stands at the centre of the field in madder and apricot, its branches carrying blossoms out to both sides. A small deer grazes beneath it, a bird flies past, and a camel stands at the right edge. Two more trees rise from vases on a cream ridge to the left, and small flowering plants — some with heart-shaped petals — are scattered across the ground.

In the terracotta earth band a second tree spreads in blue and gold, and a row of cypress forms stands along the cream foreground, each one drawn differently. Both grounds carry a strong horizontal abrash, the natural banding of hand-spun yarn dyed in small batches, and it is that movement which makes the sky read as sky and the earth as earth.

Condition: hand-knotted with a full even pile throughout, no wear, no repairs, no odour. Selvedges are intact and both ends finish in the original hand-tied fringe with coloured tassels.

Measuring 24 by 36 inches, it suits an entry, a bedside, a kitchen sink, a bathroom, or a child's room. A rug this size and this pictorial also hangs well — mounted on a wall it reads as a small woven picture, which is how many of these are actually used. See less
