The rug reads as a landscape. A blue band across the top carries four tall trees, each drawn differently and each in its own colour; below it the ground turns to green, scattered with small flowering plants; and a second blue band at the foot holds four more trees with small deer and goats grazing between them. Narrow bands of dense red and ivory scrollwork divide the sections like hedgerows.

The colour is the pleasure of it. Both grounds carry a strong horizontal abrash — the natural banding that comes from hand-spun yarn dyed in small batches — so the blue moves through slate, denim and steel across its width and the green shifts from moss to olive. That movement is deliberate and it is what separates a hand-woven Gabbeh from anything machine made.

Condition: hand-knotted with a full even pile throughout, no wear, no repairs, no odour. Selvedges are intact and both ends finish in the original hand-tied fringe with coloured tassels.

Measuring 32 by 55 inches, it suits an entry, a bedside, a kitchen, a nursery, a study, or a small bathroom, and it layers beautifully over jute or sisal. The blue and green are unusually easy to live with, and the design rewards a spot where people look down at it — beside a bed, or where a child sits on the floor. See less
