Designed in a … Read more An exceptionally well-preserved vintage Drexel Touraine III two-drawer end table, factory-marked model 290-324-3 and dated November 1977. Designed in a refined Louis XV-inspired French Provincial idiom, this handsome table combines a richly figured and banded cherry top, serpentine profile, cabriole legs and original antiqued-brass hardware.

The rectangular top is animated by symmetrically arranged figured cherry veneer, creating a subtle bookmatched or quartered pattern within a wide contrasting border. A molded edge follows the gently bowed front, emphasizing the table’s sculptural silhouette while allowing the warm wood grain to remain the primary visual focus.

Two separate full-depth drawers follow the serpentine contour of the case. Each drawer face is enriched with a shaped raised panel surrounded by an antiqued-brass floral escutcheon and pendant pull. The drawers provide useful concealed storage while preserving the graceful proportions of the design.

Softly rounded front corners transition into slender cabriole legs with restrained carved detailing and country-house character. These markings directly identify the table as Drexel model 290-324-3 from the Touraine III collection and establish its manufacture in November 1977.

The table also retains its original blue “Drexel Heritage Furnishings” label with the applied number “03537.” This smaller number was likely an internal production, inspection, control or inventory reference rather than the furniture model number; its precise factory function has not been independently documented.

The surviving marks appear on this specific table and constitute direct factory documentation of its maker, collection, model and production date.

COLLECTION AND DESIGN CONTEXT
Touraine was Drexel’s interpretation of French Provincial furniture, drawing on the flowing curves, serpentine casework and cabriole legs associated with 18th-century French design, particularly the domestic furniture of the Louis XV period.

Touraine III continued this established design vocabulary for the late-20th-century American market. Period advertising published in December 1977 describes Drexel Touraine III furniture as constructed from cherry solids and veneers, consistent with the present table’s warm coloration, figured surface and surviving November 1977 factory date.

CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIAL NOTES
The top displays figured cherry veneer arranged in a symmetrical pattern and surrounded by a broad contrasting band. The exact arrangement may be described as bookmatched or quartered, with natural tonal variation contributing to the dimensional quality of the surface.

The drawer fronts are veneered and shaped to follow the serpentine case. The drawers incorporate dovetailed joinery, solid-wood sides and secondary woods appropriate to traditional case construction.

The exact species of every concealed secondary wood has not been laboratory tested. The table is cataloged as figured cherry veneers, cherry solids and secondary woods based on its visible construction and contemporary Touraine III documentation.

The hardware is cataloged conservatively as antiqued brass-toned metal. Its original floral form, placement and surface are consistent throughout the table.
