The chandelier … Read more A decorative Scandinavian four-arm chandelier produced in Sweden during the 1930s by the renowned manufacturer Bröderna Malmströms Metallvarufabrik. The chandelier is crafted from oxidized brass and arranged around a fluted central column, from which four gracefully curved cast brass arms extend. Each arm supports a moulded glass shade in a warm cream tone with distinctive brown marbled veining. The softly translucent glass produces a warm and atmospheric light when illuminated, while the individual variations in the veining give each shade its own character. The brass construction is enriched with a number of finely considered decorative details, including sculpted lamp holders, a flower-shaped upper section and an elegant finial beneath the central body. Four scrolling arms surrounding the central column are each decorated with a suspended drop-shaped glass prism in a subtle smoky amber tone. The chandelier is suspended from an ornamental brass chain composed of decorative links, continuing the detailing of the fixture through to the ceiling canopy. The naturally aged and oxidized surface of the brass complements the warm colouring of the glass and gives the chandelier a particularly rich appearance. An elegant example of Swedish lighting from the interwar period, combining restrained classical ornamentation with the refined materials and craftsmanship associated with Scandinavian decorative arts of the era.
